Early African Kingdoms
& The Epic of Sundiata

1. The Legend of Sundiata: Visit the Kennedy Center's "African Odyssey Interactive" for an overview of the historical and legendary exploits of Sundiata, the Lion King of Mali. Also, while you're at this site learn a bit more about the Griot's craft by sampling audio and video clips available on the "What is a Griot?" page.

2. African Timelines: History, Orature, Literature & Film: An extremely comprehensive and useful compendium of historical materials on the African Continent compiled by Cora Agatucci of Central Oregon Community College.

3. Civilizations in Africa: Visit World Culture's site on the Early West African States of Ghana, Mali and Songhay for an assortment of introductory materials on the history and culture of the area.

4. The Saharan Trade: A Link Between Europe and Africa: Browse through this short photo-essay on the rise of the Trans-Saharan Trade that provided the economic basis for the rise of the Sudanic Kingdoms of Ghana, Mali and Songhay. While at this site you might want to browse through the rest of the Tradelinks Across the World web site which provides an detailed look into four of the ancient world's international trade routes.

6. The Old Kingdoms: Browse through Connections' collection of materials on the West African kingdoms of Ghana, Mali and Songhay.

The Pre-History of Africa: Read through Richard Effland's short essay on the rise of complex social structures in Trans-Saharan Africa for a brief overview of early history of the northern continent. This page is part of MCC's Buried Cities & Lost Tribes Cyberspace Guide where you'll also find Leo Africanus's "Description of Timbuktu" (1526) and a short slide show on " Zimbabwe: The Great City of Stone."

8. Advent of Islam in Africa: Read through the Baobob Project's short essays on the introduction of the Islamic faith in West Africa and East Africa.
