 PLEASE READ THIS INFORMATION CAREFULLY!

NOTE: There are several images on this page, which may require a minute or two to load over a dial-up connection.

The image within the black border below is an actual screen shot (reduced in size) of the form you will be using. Below it you will find section-by-section instructions on how to use the form. At the bottom of the page you will also find links to information about how to locate and evaluate resources on the web.

For demonstration purposes, a sample entry for the UGIS 55A web site has been included in the section-by-section illustrations below.

If you have already reviewed this material, you can go to the form now.

The form you will use looks like this (again, this is a picture, not the actual form):

Using the Form

Getting Started

Recommended: Once you have the form open in your browser, open a new, additional browser window. To do this, go to your "File" menu and select "New Browser" or "New Window." Use the new window you have opened to browse the web and locate resources, leaving the original window with the form open in the background. Then, whenever you find a site you want to add with the form, you can simply copy the URL, click on the form window to bring it to the front, then paste or type in the address to be added and fill out the other fields. This way, the form is always at hand; you don't have to retrace your steps or load the page again to get here. NOTE: This information also appears at the top of the form.

Top Section

Top of Form

Add to the Category: When filling out the form, the first thing you must do is select a category for your entry. CLICK AND HOLD on the field where it says "General World History" (the default category) to activate the pop-up menu. From the pop-up menu, select the category for your addition. DON'T FORGET THIS IMPORTANT STEP -- MANY PEOPLE DO!!

  • Ancient Near East
  • Ancient Greece
  • Ancient India
  • Ancient China
  • Classical Studies
  • Mesoamerica
  • Arabian World
  • Early African Kingdoms
  • Scandinavia
  • Medieval France
  • Buddhism in Asia
  • Medieval Japan
  • Medieval Studies
  • World Cultures
  • General World History

Site name or subject: Give a short title for your resource (it must be no more than 30 characters in length). It should be the actual name of the site or something close to it. You can also name it for the subject covered by the site.

Complete URL: Type in the complete address for the resource, including the http:// prefix. Be sure to check for errors, including spaces (there should be no spaces anywhere within a URL).

Middle Section

Middle of Form

Type in your name and your e-mail address. If you have no e-mail address, leave the field blank.

Resource Description/Evaluation: In the large box, type in your comments about the site. You need to state what can be found at the site, as well as offer some comments about the quality of material found there.

Bottom Section and Submission Process

Submit

When you have finished filling out the form, click ONCE on the Submit Resource button. CLICK ONLY ONCE. There will be a pause while your addition is processed.

After a few moments you should get a message confirming the addition of your resource. Wait at least 60 seconds for this message. If you do not see it, before clicking on anything else, click on the STOP button on your browser's toolbar. Then click on "Submit Resource" again.

If you make a mistake filling out the form, click on Start Over and it will clear out the entire form.

If your submission is correctly handled, you will get a new page with the following message:

Processed!

Browsing Your Submission

To see your addition, use the Contributions Menu link and then click on the appropriate category. You can also use the menu to browse entries in other categories. If you check immediately after submission, your entry should appear at the top of the menu for the selected category. The entry for the submission illustrated above, added to the "Classical Studies" category, looks like this (at the time the picture was taken, this was the only entry for the category):

Submissions Menu

Clicking on the link for the submission takes you to the page for that entry, which looks like this:

Classical Studies Entry

Clicking on the URL for the entry will launch the page in a new browser window (leaving the submission entry page open behind it).

The Response Form

Every submitted entry has its own page and includes a form at the bottom for providing commentary and feedback on that entry. DO NOT USE THE RESPONSE FORM TO ADD NEW LINKS! Any responses to a particular entry will appear in a menu on that entry's page (between the entry itself and the response form).

Troubleshooting

If you get all the way through the submission process but you don't see your entry in the appropriate category menu, try:

If your submission ended up in the wrong category, you will have to resubmit it. There is no way to change a submission once it has been processed.

If you have followed all the guidelines above and still can't find your submission, contact webmaster@learning.berkeley.edu.
